Review: Invictus (2009) *** 1/2

Though Invictus is not always subtle and it lacks a personal hook that would’ve made it truly memorable, it’s a terrific story elevated by one of Morgan Freeman’s finest performances and it ultimately delivers the pleasingly inspirational kick you hope for.

More respectful murmurs about ‘Invictus’

I suppose there’s something to be said for taking a strong story and simply staying out of its way. This sounds like what Clint Eastwood has done with Invictus. As reviews continue to trickle in, it all sounds pretty unremarkable, but I’m forced to admit that all those who had it pegged for a best [...]

First word on ‘Invictus’ – Drama or piece of furniture?

David Ansen’s review is respectful but far from a rave. Is this really a unanimous pick to get an Oscar nomination?

Trailer: Invictus

Apple has the first official trailer for Clint Eastwood’s Invictus, the rugby/Apartheid drama starring Morgan Freeman as Nelson Mandela and Matt Damon as the captain of South Africa’s national rugby team.
I’m still not buying it. It looks earnest, socially conscious and borderline unbearable right down to the Ladysmith Black Mambazo music. Ok, I’m being a [...]

Pencil in Eastwood, Freeman and Damon for Dec. 11

Clint Eastwood’s Nelson Mandela and Rugby Save the World Movie (now called Invictus) starring Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon was always assumed to be an awards season opener and now the date has officially been set for December 11.
Clint’s only got one movie coming out this year? He must be getting old.
On the other hand, [...]

Review: Gran Torino (2008) *** 1/2

Grrrrrr…
In Gran Torino, Clint Eastwood steps out from behind the camera and onto the big screen for the first time since 2004’s Million Dollar Baby. Taking a page from the character continuum he began with Dirty Harry, here he plays Walt Kowalski, a racist Korean War veteran, retired Detroit autoworker and recent widower. Alienated from [...]

Movies You May Have Missed: 11/8/08

There hasn’t been a lot of exciting activity in the Movies You May Have Missed DVD department the last couple of weeks. Eagle-eyed readers will note I skipped the column entirely last Saturday. Transsiberian anyone? No? I didn’t think so.
This week brings Hellboy II: The Golden Army, a good movie but it doesn’t quite meet [...]

Trailer: Gran Torino

Eagle-eyed and ever-vigilant Nick Plowman noticed that Apple has the new Gran Torino trailer that’s supposed to be playing this weekend in front of Changeling.
74 bonus points to Jennybee for anticipating the “Get off my lawn!” line in the poster thread.

I like the trailer. The simple [...]

Weekend Forecast: 10/23/08

It’s all about the limited releases this week, but let’s get the wide releases out of the way first.

High School Musical 3: Senior Year. Being a Disney film, I’m guessing no one ends up passed out in the back of a rented limo on prom night with her dress pulled up over her head and [...]
