The Muriels: Cinematic Breakthrough and Music

Muriel continues to spread the love for the best in cinema in the year that was 2009. This time Christoph Waltz nabs the award for Best Cinematic Breakthrough honoring “a performer, filmmaker, or technician who made a notable debut in film, took his/her career to a higher level, or revealed unforeseen layers to his/her talent (read…)

Oscar Noms: Avatar, Hurt Locker with 9

Avatar and The Hurt Locker top the nominations with 9 each while Inglourious Basterds nets 8. The Blind Side surprised (some) by sneaking in with a nomination and A Serious Man overcame doubts it could make it. Maggie Gyllenhaal was also something of a surprise in the Supporting Actress category. Picture Avatar The Blind Side (read…)

Wes Anderson’s NBR acceptance speech

Here’s a video Wes Anderson did to accept the NBR’s Special Filmmaking Achievement Award for Fantastic Mr. Fox. After the video, he supposedly appeared on stage for a real thank you. More and more critics and prognosticators are waking up to the idea that Fantastic Mr. Fox is the best of the films with a (read…)

Satanic Mr. Fox

With people trying to turn “Chaos Reigns” from Lars Von Trier’s Antichrist into a t-shirt friendly catch phrase, it was probably inevitable that some smarty would make the connection between Antichrist, Willem Dafoe, talking foxes and Wes Anderson’s Fantastic Mr. Fox… and now Peter Debruge has. It’s not embeddable, but it’s sort of funny. Check (read…)

The sociopathic Mr. Anderson or the cry baby Mr. Oliver?

This is a non-story unless you’re a fan of behind the scenes gossip and on set squabbles. I’m not, but back in September I dropped passing reference (by way of Vulture) to bad blood between Wes Anderson and the team of animators he hired to bring his adaptation of Roald Dahl’s Fantastic Mr. Fox to (read…)

Trailer 2: Fantastic Mr. Fox

“You really are a, quote unquote, fantastic fox.” Judging by the response I’m picking up around the internet, I stand nearly alone in my unrestrained enthusiasm for Wes Anderson’s Fantastic Mr. Fox. The only thing I don’t like about this latest trailer is the voice over and whorish pull-quotes. The rest? Gold.

Character Posters: Fantastic Mr. Fox

Click to enlarge Courtesy of Empire, the obligatory character posters for Wes Anderson’s Fantastic Mr. Fox which opens November 13th. This one is facing a bit more flack lately than Spike Jonze’s Where the Wild Things Are (can we have a moratorium on the word “twee” now? Please?), but my enthusiasm is still running high. (read…)

Another future ‘Fantastic Mr. Fox’ DVD featurette

To assuage fears that Spike Jonze was ruining a beloved childhood classic, wily Where the Wild Things Are marketers put together a featurette with author Maurice Sendak giving his enthusiastic stamp of approval. It was a sharp move and after an early bumpy ride, enthusiasm for Wild Things has been growing. Now it’s Fantastic Mr. (read…)

Future DVD gewgaw: Fantastic Mr. Fox

Apple has an exclusive (well it was exclusive until it popped up on YouTube and everywhere else) behind the scenes look at Wes Anderson’s adaptation of Roald Dahl’s Fantastic Mr. Fox. It’s narrated by Jason Schwartzman (Mr. Fox’s son Ash in the film) who sounds like he’s speaking to the 7-year-olds at which the film (read…)

The Fantastic Mr. Cocker?

Jarvis Cocker, the ex-frontman of the Britpop outfit Pulp says he’s contributing to the soundtrack of Wes Anderson’s upcoming stop-motion animation adaptation of Roald Dahl’s Fantastic Mr. Fox. Color us increasingly intrigued. There’s an engaging childlike innocence to everything Anderson does, and even seemingly to the man himself, so he seems on off-kilter yet perfect (read…)
